I’ve always said that we like to keep things as natural as possible for our children. We don’t use medications unless absolutely necessary & even then we try to use homeopathic remedies first. As such, we like to use all natural products at bath time, we’ve tried a variety of different things & for the last few weeks we’ve been trialling Aveeno Baby.
I hadn’t heard of Aveeno Baby before beginning our trial, which is surprising because they have been around (and recommended by dermatologists) for more than 60 years. The products are based on natural colloidal oatmeal which is a great moisturiser. When The Boy was suffering with eczema we added oatmeal to his bath water which always helped his skin when it was at it’s worse, this just makes that process so much easier!
The baby (so far) hasn’t had any eczema but his skin has been quite dry. The Girl also has very dry skin & has used some pretty heavy medications to help with her soreness, as much as I despise using them they have been a necessity.
We have tried the four different Aveeno Baby products.
BABY SOOTHING RELIEF MOISTURE CREAM:
“Clinically proven to moisturise for 24 hours, Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream contains colloidal oatmeal and rich emollients to relieve dry, red and itchy skin. The non-greasy formula absorbs quickly and is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.”
We quite liked the cream, though I found that it did take a while for the skin to feel dry after application. It wasn’t greasy but it just seemed to take a while to absorb into the skin. I found it best for particular problem spots (Baby’s feet in our case) rather than an all over cream.
BABY SOOTHING RELIEF CREAMY WASH:
“The hydrating, tear-free wash is specially formulated with natural colloidal oatmeal and rich emollients that gently cleanse and soothe. Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, it relieves dry skin associated with eczema, when used in a daily routine with Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream.”
I really liked the creamy wash for bath time, but would have preferred a fragrance in it, which sounds silly because most parents want fragrance free products for their sensitive skin bubbas. I’ve used other natural baby products that use tiny amounts of essential oils (particularly calming lavender) and I think this might be a nice addition to an already lovely creamy wash. The scent aside, this wash made The Baby’s skin feel lovely and soft before using any lotion or cream.
BABY DAILY MOISTURISING LOTION:
“The non-greasy formula contains natural colloidal oatmeal blended with rich emollients to soothe and help protect baby’s delicate skin. The lotion absorbs quickly and provides lasting moisture protection with no drying alcohol.”
The lotion is great for a post bath massage to relax The Baby & make his skin feel nice and soft before bedtime. It absorbs really quickly so once the massage is done his clothes can go straight back on without getting gooey with lotion.
BABY WASH & SHAMPOO:
“The hypoallergenic formula blends natural oat extract into a rich, lathering, soap- free cleanser to clean baby skin without drying. The tear-free formula gently cleanses the skin and leaves a soft, fresh fragrance.”
The combination body wash & shampoo is great as an every day wash. It has a lovely clean, baby smell which I love in a shampoo product. I always think that a shampoo, body wash combo is good for kids so you can just squirt a bit in the water and not have to worry about a separate shampoo.
Overall I think Aveeno Baby is a pretty good alternative to a lot of baby products, no yucky petorchemicals & other nasties which makes this mum very happy.
